Response to the article in DH supplement January 2014

I read today, an article in the ‘Inside Labrador’ Supplement of the Downhome Life Magazine. It was about me…or really more about us.  I have to say I am humbled by the kind words I saw printed on the page. This is not something I am used to, this ‘seeing my name in print’…it’s a little weird and somewhat unnerving!

I can provide a bit of a back story here. A bit before the end of last year a gentleman named Grant Loveys asked if he could interview me regarding Sculpin Tickle. He wanted to do the article for an upcoming issue. We met at East Side Mario’s and over a couple of beers I brought him up to speed on what I’ve been doing (I barely noticed the little digital recorder taking in everything I was saying!). I was only too happy to do so, as speaking about my ol’ hometown and friends are topics near to my heart. We spoke of many things. By the time the interview was over I’d covered fifty-odd years of history and opinions, feelings, observations and many, many stories. From that meeting Grant managed to piece together a rather flattering discourse on his interpretation of my [our] experiences being raised in the hinterland of Western Labrador.

Afterwards, I realized that I had painted a pretty rosy picture of Lab West in the early days, which for the most part it was, but there was also a downside, as there nearly always is. I felt I should call Grant up and add a few things but life once again got in the way and the call was never made.

That leads me to now. From here on in I’m going to put in some of the ‘not so rosy’ things that I remember as well. Also, Sculpin Tickle is not going to be an everyday item any more. It just got to be too much to take on at this point in my life! After all, my underlying purpose is to try and teach myself some simple web skills…and so, with great thanks to all, please come visit the site, leave a comment and have a nice day!

Happy New Year one& all!

Well, we made it. 2014! Who would have thought huh?
Last year brought my website creation skills up a lot (now I'm at about 'first day of grade one' level!). For the most part I got this site going and did a lot of 'Sculpin Tickle' drawings done. I did not however, get as many as I set out to do, which was 365 in one year. I realize now, that was a lofty goal and one quite unobtainable for someone who wishes to continue being in a life besides the internet!
Having some time over the last while to reflect on what I want to accomplish with this site, I think it's wiser of me to include more of my interests. I still intend to do 'Tickles' but not on a regular basis. Also, the 'PG' portion of growing up in Labrador West has been covered well enough in my mind. There are other issues that affected us all which are not so innocent. I'll get to them all in due time.

For now though I want to focus on some other passtimes of mine. This year's main project will be to go into my studio and record some original songs I've been gathering over the years (in much the same way as an aging fighter gathers scars) from 'Hard Knocks'. This endeavour will also be a learning experience. I've been fooling around with various software and feel it's time to up the challenge...and actually learn how to use them properly! As I figure out how I will post my progress. Please continue to comment and say your piece as though we are still sitting in a room together quaffing our beverage of choice. Believe it or not that's good therapy.

Of course I will continue to upload photos, paintings, mutterings and writings as I see fit...this is after all, my studio!

Wishing all the very best in 2014,
Snowden.
