This is the God's honest truth! I was so driven mad by swarms of flies that I threw down my trouting rod and basket, slung off my pack and just ran! Ran as fast and far as I could before I had to stop. It was hot, no wind and I could gain a few moments before the swarm would find me...at which point I would have to run again. Very few trout were caught that day and I must have sweat out a gallon of fluid (I figure the flies took at least that much in blood!) I've heard tell that a person lost in the interior of Labrador will go mad before he starves (which people have done ...see Leonidas Hubbard's story...another time perhaps). I believe it beyond a doubt.

I remember hiking with dad and at one point I tore off my sweatshirt and wrapped it around my head in desperation to escape the flies. My dad looking on laughing as he smoked away on his pipe dwasn't bothered at all. Maybe the pipe helped! I love the memories, Labrador will always be home to me.
