Yeh...Health Care was always an issue in Newfoundland & Labrador. This strip includes remedies that were kind of commonly spoken of when I was a lad, some of them pretty far fetched by today's standards! I can remember my parents talking about how they had to take a boat to the mainland (Newfoundland is the biggest island off the coast of Random Island) to see any medical resources back in the day before the 'Bar Bridge'. I threw the reference to the clergyman in because in my youth those guys all looked old, dressed in black and were scary as crap! The bread poultice? Actually worked. I had a splinter in my thumb as a child which got infected. It was terrible, oozed goop and hurt like hell! Antibiotics were scarce in western Labrador back in the days before dinosaurs so Ma whipped up a poultice, wrapped it around my thumb in gauze and taped it up. The mang was changed daily and eventually the infection was subdued. How did that work? No idea. Perhaps natural antibiotics from the rotting, wet bread?!
Now days of course there's a drug for everything...even a drug to get you off drugs!!
